In the past chelation therapy did cause several deaths from kidney toxicity. The dosage has now been changed to address the safety concerns caused by these deaths. However, there are still risks with chelation therapy and it is important to take certain precautions and know the safety concerns that are relevant with this therapy. Some of the precautions needed when undergoing chelation therapy include:
Ensure the dosage of EDTA is not too high. The recommended dose is 3 grams.
Elderly patients should use less EDTA and have it administered less frequently.
Tests and examinations should be performed before the EDTA is administered.
Care should be taken to ensure that there is not an excessive removal of calcium.
The infusion should not be performed too quickly, as this may result in inflammation.
Diabetic patients should have a snack before the treatment to help prevent blood glucose levels from dropping.
Extra care needs to be taken for people suffering from congestive heart failure.
Is EDTA Chelation Therapy Widely Accepted?
There is no scientific evidence to prove that chelation therapy is effective and some health professionals reject it as a possible treatment. It is not widely accepted among the medical community. However, there have been studies and experiments that seem to show that patients are happy with the results of chelation therapy.
If you believe you would benefit from chelation therapy (either intravenous EDTA chelation therapy or oral chelation therapy) it is worth mentioning this to your doctor. Many doctors are willing to consider their patient's desire for other treatment options.
