Benefits of Human Stem Cell Research

The exact benefits of human stem cell research are not known, but many scientists believe stem cell research has the potential to treat many diseases like Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. As research is still in its early stages, it is difficult to know exactly how beneficial stem cell therapy would be in treating diseases.
Scientists believe that using embryonic stem cells would give them greater opportunities for treating diseases than are presently possible.

The Controversy Surrounding Stem Cell Research

The ethics of stem cell research has provoked a lot of controversy. While scientists and medical researchers are excited about the possible benefits of stem cell research, others oppose stem cell research on moral and ethical grounds. The debate is often shown as a battle between scientists and religious groups. However, there are many people on both sides of the argument.

With more research and more advances, stem cell research is being hailed as a possible cure for many diseases. Some scientists and members of the public want more funding and less regulations and for the public to be able to be treated with stem cell research techniques. They suggest that some people are needlessly suffering from diseases that could be cured if stem cell research advanced.

Against stem cell research are those who oppose to it on ethical and moral grounds. Opposition has mainly come from religious groups, but different people of all types have objected to the practice. Some people agree with the practice of adult stem cell research, but disagree with embryonic stem cell research. For those who see an embryo or a fetus as a human being, harvesting cells from an embryo or fetus is repugnant and morally objectionable.

This is not simply a debate between science and religion, however. Many people from all levels of society have taken a stand on one side of the debate, including some high profile people. A large proportion of people feel very strongly about it, one way or the other.

Future of Stem Cell Research

It is difficult to see exactly what the future of stem cell research will be at this early stage of its development. There is great debate about what that future should even be. Those who agree with the practice of embryonic stem cell research see the future as a place where diseases can be easily cured and may even become extinct. Those opposed to stem cell research see a more bleak future, or else hope that the practice will be stopped. Only one thing seems certain, stem cell therapy is likely to be a topic that provides controversy for some time to come.
