Coming Home To HomeopathyThe word "homeopathy" is derived from the Greek words "homoios (similar)" and "pathos (suffering or disease)". It is a method of alternative medicine. The treatments follows the rule of "Like with Like". Homeopathy explained that by providing the person with the same substance as treatment that will produce similar symptoms in a healthy person that is present in the sick person. The substances or materials used for treatments are initially diluted in pure water to an extent that there are no materials or substance left. The minute doses of active ingredients and naturally occurring substances provides a healthy balance in body. History of HomeopathyA brief history of homeopathy dates back to 1700's when Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician, initiated formulating homeopathy's fundamental principles. Hahnemann and early practitioners administered herbs, minerals and other materials or substances and kept the observation in a record, which later was compiled in a book called material medica. This book is used as a reference book to patient's symptoms and corresponding drug. How Does Homeopathy Work?Homeopathy remedies works on certain basic fundamentals, which are controversial and not well accepted by modern methodologies of treatment.Law of SimilarUnder this law it is believed that symptoms of the diseases can be treated or cured by giving small amounts of homeopathy substances that would produce similar effect on a healthy person if given in large doses.Theory of InfinitesimalsThis theory states that smaller the dose the more strong and powerful is the effect, and therefore diluted the substances more while preparing the medicine.MiasmsAt times homeopathy treatment did not result in 100% success, which resulted in a new theory. Hahnemann in this theory states that every disease has an underlying root, an evil influence that he referred as Miasm. It has to be dealt with directly before treatment can be achieved with the usual homeopathic preparation.Progression of Homeopathy StagesHahnemann's and his following practitioners based their treatment on one remedy at a time. The treatment was based on minor symptoms in the sick person. Single remedy to treat the person is popularly known as Classical Homeopathy. However more often mixture of several substances or remedies are combined together and prepared for the treatment, this approach is known as complex homeopathy. In classical homeopathy the treatment starts with single dose of the remedy in a particular potency, and the practitioner waits to see how the dose affects and the symptoms for which treatment was essential. The time that may pass during this waiting and reporting period can be few days, but mostly it can take number of weeks and or few months. Complex or combination homeopathic treatments have been prepared and practiced for many different uses. Health food stores and pharmacies generally hold remedies labeled for colds, headaches, nausea, constipation etc. Ideally there is not much difference in single and complex practice of homeopathy. Mixing several ingredients together has an amplified effect on the person and mostly practitioners practice them in a conventional clinic, which has made it popular, and the classical approach is mostly not under the knowledge of public.
