The Sessions of Smoking Hypnotherapy

When you approach a hypnotherapist about quit smoking hypnotherapy, then they will often explain that there are several sessions involved in smoking hypnotherapy. Some offer to be able to help many in only one session, while others will not put a limit on the number.


The hypnotist focuses on using a very positive tone and an attitude to reinforce in your mind the desire to not smoke. They are usually very gentle, but any other attitude will prevent the hypnosis. They work to instill a motivation and confidence, using the power of suggestion to a willing mind.

Some of the ideas that will be focused on while in the hypnosis and smoking session are:
  • Focusing on a time when you no longer smoke
  • Developing a reward system for when you do not smoke
  • Imagining yourself enjoying life apart from smoking

Supplementary Sessions of Hypnosis

Because hypnosis and smoking works through the power of suggestion, several sessions may be needed. The smoker may need to learn to relax more in the presence of the stranger, the hypnotist. Again, relaxation is the key, and allowing yourself to be under the mental influence of another. While there is not really any similarity to TV staged hypnotic shows, the hypnotist does need quiet, and the ability to make the patient feel comfortable.

These same types of sessions can also work through self hypnosis to stop smoking. A number of hypnotists offer the same thing - but in either a CD or MP3 format. Then it is reinforced with emails, and further online downloads, and extra sessions.

Criticisms Against Hypnosis

While there are a number of criticisms against hypnosis, most do not understand what hypnosis is. It is not one giving total control of their own mind to another. They always know what is going on, and they always have the ability to say no. Neither can it cause one individual to do something against their will. The person is always conscious and able to understand, and to prevent themselves from certain actions or words if they do not concur. A third criticism is that the individual may become more susceptible to the power of suggestion from outside influences - this may be true.

So, while the results are not all in yet, and the scientific studies are not through looking at it, it does seem true that you may be able to take a session in quit smoking hypnosis, and it may help you put down those cigars, or cigarettes. Since not every person can be hypnotized, only you can find out if you can quit smoking with hypnotherapy.
