The Procedure for Eye Laser Surgery

Once in the operation room for eye laser surgery, your eyes will be anesthetized with some drops. After the anesthesia takes effect, a retainer will be placed around your eyes, so your eyelids are kept open during the procedure.
This retainer has a suction ring, that once it is applied over the cornea, it will create a suction effect. This instrument permits an easy access to the cornea during the operation.

After using the suction ring, the surgeon will make use of the laser to correct your eye problem.

Once the surgery is finished you may feel some uncomfortable effects, like pain, itching or strange visual effects. These are normal post-procedure effects. But, if you feel intense pain, you should go to your doctor immediately for a thorough examination.

During the following weeks you will be forbidden the use of any kind of cream or lotion around your eye, or make any kind of physical activity that may compromise the surgery. It's better to maintain calm during those days so everything goes right.

What Are the Pro's?

The benefits of laser eye surgery can be reduced to one: you may stop using contact lenses or frames. Of course, that depends on your age and your prior eye condition. Many people find the use of these physical instruments tiresome or problematic for their jobs. For example, have you seen a sport professional using glasses? It's quite a problem to use them while you are involved in a physical activity.

What about the Cons?

In the worst case, you may lose some lines of vision. Although it happens in a minimal percentage of the procedures, it does occur. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to correct this.

Another problem is strange visual effects during nighttime, like double vision and halos. These laser eye surgery complications don't have a solution either.

Finally, a possible aftereffect is the development of dry eye. In this syndrome, the patient is unable to produce enough tears to maintain their eyes lubricated. The only solution to this predicament is to use eye drops

So, which one is better? PRK, LASEK or Lasik eye surgery? Considering the time of recovery and the amount of pain suffered by the patient, LASIK is a better option over PRK or LASEK. The problem of LASIK is that the cornea integrity is compromised by the procedure. If this fact worries you, then you should go for PRK. It may be annoying in the short term, but you will not be affected by possible complications after the operation.

As you can see eye laser surgery has existed for a long time and as any surgical procedure, it implies some risks. If you feel comfortable with this, and are desperate of getting rid of your glasses or your contact lenses, then corrective laser eye surgery is the answer to your prayers. That is, if you can afford the cost of laser eye surgery.
