What are Some of the Chiropractic Treatment Types

There are at least twenty types of chiropractic therapy techniques being used today. Some of the most common are the diversified technique, applied kinesiology, and the sacro-occipital technique.
Diversified Technique
One of the most widely used forms of manipulation in chiropractic care, treatment by the diversified technique employs a quick adjustment to correct misalignments of the spinal segments of the neck and back. It involves a small, quick thrust to increase movement in a specific joint with a corresponding crack or pop. It is one of the quickest ways to restore movement to a joint.
Applied Kinesiology
This treatment deals not only with the placement of bones but with the muscles that work to position them. By employing light massage and sometimes using acupressure points on the opposing muscles attached to a bone that is out of alignment, normal muscle function is restored.

Sacro-Occipital Technique
With this technique the body is allowed to adjust itself. The patient is placed on padded blocks positioned in the pelvic area. This allows the body to work out pelvic muscle tension that has a corresponding influence on the neck.

What Happens during an Office Visit?

Like any visit to a doctor you will be asked to provide a medical history and to describe your current symptoms. The practitioner will most likely take X-rays to insure that no serious conditions are present. When the appropriate adjustment has been determined, the chiropractor will use his hands to apply sudden but controlled force to a joint. Don't be alarmed if you hear a cracking sound and don't be alarmed if you don't hear one. In some individuals the sound occurs when the joint surfaces separate.

The chiropractor may also use stretching and massage techniques especially in the presence of a muscle spasm. Some practitioners will also use ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, or prescribe chiropractic physical therapy exercises that can be preformed at home. The number of treatments required depends on the responsiveness of the individual patient and the nature of the complaint.

Is There any Scientific Proof Behind Chiropractic Treatment?

Simply put, there is no definitive scientific proof that chiropractic therapy works, but there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence from patients who attest to a lessening of lower back pain after a chiropractic session. The issue of efficacy for neck pain and headaches is still in greater debate, but the American Medical Association removed its blanket indictment of chiropractic as quackery in 1978 and since 1972, Medicare benefits will cover chiropractic treatments. In 1974 the Council on Chiropractic Education was recognized by the United States Department of Education as a national accrediting authority and there are now sixteen colleges in the United States that award the degree Doctor of Chiropractic.

All chiropractic treatment types are noninvasive and considered to be a conservative approach to complaints that manifest with pain in the joints, particularly of the neck and back. Not all ailments, however, are suitable for chiropractic care. Treatment for serious diseases will require the intervention of a medical doctor.
