Oxygen Therapy - Get Cured While Relaxing In A Pressurized Chamber

Currently a number of oxygen therapies are in use ranging from oxygen therapy equipment in the home to hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a special chamber.
The gas oxygen, when used as a drug, benefits individuals who suffer from certain diseases of the lung. The interaction of oxygen and food provide energy for the human body. Oxygen therapy for emphysema or ailments like sarcoidosis use external sources of oxygen to help the person to stay more active and comfortable.

Oxygen treatments can improve quality of sleep and mood, enhance mental alertness, increase stamina, and prevent heart failure in individuals with severe lung disease. Because oxygen used over a long time period can be toxic, a prescription is required to use oxygen therapy.

What Other Types of Oxygen Therapies are being Used?

Apart from oxygen therapies conducted in the home for various breathing ailments, a range of oxygen therapies are being used to heal wounds and to help patients recover more quickly from surgery. There are also some experimental techniques being employed that remain controversial.

Hyperbaric Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy treats the entire body with oxygen at a pressure greater than the normal 14.7 pounds per square inch applied by the atmosphere of the earth. Normally a human breathes a mixture of 20 percent oxygen, 80 percent nitrogen. In a hyperbaric chamber the pressure is increased by two atmospheres and the oxygen mixture raised to 100%.

The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy include an increase in the oxygen concentration in the tissues, the stimulation of new blood vessel growth in areas of reduced circulation, and the increased efficacy of antioxidants to scavenge for free radicals. This enhances white blood cell action and aids in the treatment of infection. Recently hyperbaric therapy has begun to be used for such conditions as stroke, diabetic ulcers, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis among other disorders.
Ozone Therapy
In ozone therapy an ozone generator introduces pure ozone into the human body. Whereas oxygen is O2, ozone is O3. The method has been used for eighty years to treat a wide variety of illnesses from cancer and AIDS to chronic fatigue and lupus. The introduction of ozone has been shown to increase oxygen delivery to the tissues and organs of the body, to increase blood circulation, to detoxify the body's systems, and to boost the immune system.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide in a 35% solution acceptable for use as food is marketed, usually in liquid form, for medicinal or therapeutic uses. The substance claims to hyper-oxygenate the body and is the most popular method to achieve this effect. (Another method is the consumption of iodized water.) Supposedly the hydrogen peroxide exposes the cells to larger concentrations of oxygen than they would normally receive. While this has been espoused as a treatment for both AIDS and cancer, the American Cancer Society has issued a statement that there is no scientific evidence supporting either this use or the intravenous administration of hydrogen peroxide for the same purposes.

What Happens in the Various Oxygen Therapies?

Of course with home oxygen treatment the patient is in control of the equipment and its maintenance. If you are using oxygen in the home, use only the recommended rate of flow and do not adjust the flow without consulting with your doctor first.

If you are taking a hyperbaric oxygen treatment you will be placed in a device that looks like a long, low tube outfitted with various control panels. You will lie face up on a padded surface in the closed chamber but you will be able to see through a porthole. People with claustrophobia often cannot tolerate this environment and should seek a "multi-place" chamber which is roughly the size of a mini-van. The procedure is painless and you will be asked to wear loose 100% cotton clothing.

After your blood pressure and pulse are checked you will be closed inside the chamber. Be sure to go to the bathroom. You'll be in there at least an hour. You may feel a slight pressure as the chamber fills, similar to the sensation passengers experience on a descending airplane. Your ears may plug up or pop. Chewing gum or holding your nose and blowing gently will help.

Sessions last anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes and as many as 40 may be required depending on the condition from which you suffer and its severity. The cost for a single session ranges from $300 to $400.

Hydrogen peroxide treatments either involve the oral ingestion of a water / hydrogen peroxide solution or potentially an IV drip. These treatments are highly controversial and should not be undertaken without a consultation with your regular physician. Ozone treatments are normally dispensed via the same methods as compressed or liquid oxygen.
