Reiki - Simple Healing to Technique to Promote a Sense of Well Being

Reiki healing, a Japanese technique for better health and stress reduction is administered by physical contact with the hands. It is based on the premise that an unseen life force or energy flows through humans.
When that force is low, humans are at a greater risk for illness or disease. When the force is elevated, individuals are happier and healthier. In Reiki history, the technique reputedly began thousands of years ago in Tibet and was rediscovered in the 1880s by Dr. Mikao Usui.

Reiki training is more a recognition of the individual abilities of a given practitioner to attune themselves to the energy flow of another person than any formal curriculum of technique. While the placement of the hands can be taught, the ability to channel energy is a gift.

How does Reiki Work?

In Reiki, the practitioner transfers their energy to that of their patient to enhance the individual's state of being. This transference increases the body's ability to heal itself by achieving balanced energy and restoring natural life force. It is a holistic approach that touches all levels of the body, mind, and spirit.

How does Reiki differ from Other Energy Healing Techniques?

The main difference between Reiki and other energy healing methods is the inclusiveness of this discipline. Reiki can be used in combination with elements of just about every other practice including the recognition of auras, the balancing of the chakras, the use of crystals, aromatherapy, naturopathy, and homeopathy. Reiki practitioners realize that people channel their energy in different ways and embrace the tools that seem to achieve the maximum benefit in their unique form of the practice. By combining Reiki with massage techniques or addressing the power of a given chakra, Reiki seeks to maximize the healing experience.

What Ailments can Reiki Treat?

Reiki healing is well suited to treating sports related injuries, cuts and burns, internal disease, emotional disorders, and stress-related ailments. In more serious illnesses such as cancer or heart disease, Reiki can be an excellent ancillary treatment to more conventional Western methods by strengthening the over-all well being of the individual and helping them to stay emotionally centered and strong.

What happens in a Reiki Treatment?

In preparation for the actual treatment, the patient will be shown the Reiki symbols to achieve a sort of "imprinting." It is also possible to meditate upon these symbols. They are Cho Ku Rei, the symbol of power; Sei He Ki, the symbol for mental and emotional healing; Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, the symbol to transmit energy across time and space; and Dai Ko Myo, the Master Symbol.

During a Reiki treatment a number of hand positions, a kind of Reiki massage, may be used. For instant the hands may be placed on either side of the nose, the palms covering the eyes with the thumbs resting on the bridge and the fingertips covering the cheeks and upper lip. This position covers the sinuses, eyes, pituitary glands, and teeth to deal with issues related to colds and allergies, fatigue, or general discontent.

By placing the hands over the ears with the fingers extending down the jaw to the neck, a position covering the semi-circular canals of the ears, problems wi th balance may be addressed. With the hands at the back of the neck an overall feeling of relaxation is achieved and headaches, colds, asthma, and circulatory problems are helped. (There are other positions on the chest, abdomen, and back.)

Reiki patients often report a feeling of warmth or immense good will during a session and say that they come away with an enhanced feeling of well being and a renewed sense of vigor and energy.
