Pet Therapy - They Help Cure Your Ailments

Recent research has shown that people who suffered from heart attacks live longer when they have pets. Pets used in therapy, may help lower the blood pressure (one of the best known benefits of pet therapy) and will help a patient to feel better and more at ease again.
Watching a fish tank filled with fish will at least temporarily lower the heart rate and blood pressure.

Patients in coronary care units in hospitals found that those who owned pets were more likely to be alive for longer than those who did not own pets. Only 6 percent of all the patients who owned pets died within one year after having received treatment.

Pets provide a constant comfort and focus for our attention. They make us want to care for them and Animals bring out our nurturing instinct. Pets make us feel safe and accepted no matter who we are.

How Does Pet Therapy Work?

Pet owners might have different personalities than people who do not own pets. An interesting and varied daily life full of activity is the recipe for a healthy life. Owning a pet affects people as stroking and cuddling an animal makes us feel relaxed and at ease. Speechless communication with our pets makes us feel relaxed.

Therapy pets make their owners feel needed and responsible for the wellbeing of the animal. This stimulates the survival incentive in the human brain, aiding the healing process. Many cancer patients with pets have lived longer due to the fact that they had animals to take care of.

What Kinds of Pets Facilitate Therapy?

The history of pet therapy shows that animals like dogs and cats provide unconditional love and affection. Our pets will help us to shift our focus from ourselves to the wellbeing of our animal and in the process we heal our own bodies.

Surprisingly it does not really matter what type of pet you have to enjoy the therapeutic benefits. It could be a dog, a cat, parakeet, a gold fish or any other animal. The animal should be of interest to you and it is important that the pet you have selected fits your temperament and suits your available living space and lifestyle. If this is not the case, taking on the care of an animal will only be a new source of stress in your life. Pet facilitated therapy should make you and your animal happy.

Do the Pets Need Special Training to Provide Therapy?

Pet therapy research shows that pets used in therapy don't necessarily have to be trained. Training your pet yourself helps to establish a bond between owner and animal. Sometimes trained animals are necessary for people who are physically disabled to a point where it is difficult for them to train their new pet themselves. Pet therapy and children go together very well, and children can learn a lot themselves from training a pet, under adult supervision.
