Alternative medicines need stringent regulations to prevent misuse and exploitation
Alternative medicines have resulted in a multitude of issues. Firstly they have helped many people to be relieved from treacherous diseases. They have been appreciated for helping patients to enjoy unimaginable benefits. With the advent of alternative medicines in the market lots of people have even given up the very idea of conventional medicines. These medicines are liked for many reasons. Firstly they do not have side effects. Secondly their administration is quiet easy. Apart from these they help to eradicate the problem permanently by exploring and curing its root causes as opposed to a majority of conventional medicines which just suppresses the problem in question.
When all has been said for the likings and flavor for alternative medicines one must also keep in mind the fact that these are not devoid of limitations. The first thing which comes to our mind in this connection is cut throat exploitation. There are lots of people luring money from the public in the mane of alternative medicines. Besides the monetary factor it also costs a lot on the health of the person. Similarly many categories of alternative medicines have not yet been validated and there is no empirical research to prove their worth. Therefore the credibility of alternative medicines though not in question remains to be checked out thoroughly. In this context Jonathan Waxman, professor of oncology at Imperial College, London, says that the manufacture, distribution and utility of these medicines need to be regulated stringently.
The academician also pointed out several examples to substantiate how these products are sold under malicious circumstances and how they have been used to mislead the public. He also adds that unless they are regulated properly they will prove to be havoc to the medical community, in his article which was published in British Medical Journal. He also expressed support for the proposed EU legislation on this. Dr Lesley Walker, Cancer Research UK's director of cancer information who also holds the view of the former says that patients look at alternative medicines desperately in a bid to get rid of the trouble. He says even if people opt for it they must check its authenticity and as well as consult with their physician and then go ahead.
