Physical therapy for patients with movement disabilitiesPhysical therapy is a noble profession where the physical therapist assists patients who have been disabled as a result of a trauma or due to a debilitating disorder like arthritis, heart disease, cerebral palsy, fractures or even lower back pain. Many of these conditions lead to immobility of either one or both the limbs which would restrict the movement of the patient. Physical therapy is the process by which the patient is encouraged to regain movement while promoting his/her overall health.Physical therapy includes a number of exercises that are taught to the patient and the physical therapist watches over as the patient performs the exercises. The care does not include only physical help but also includes motivation that would act as a moral boost. The encouragement that is extended to the patient would aid in persuading him into trying harder and achieving greater levels of physical mobility. The caregivers, friends and relatives are also advised on the amount of care and the help that would need to be extended to help their loved one reach better levels of movement. Physical therapy is designed for a patient keeping in mind his medical history and the physical examination that is conducted by the physical therapist. The therapy may include exercises, emotional pep talks, monitoring and many other interventional methods. Physical therapy also has specialisations and there are many different types that include orthopaedic, geriatrics, paediatrics etc. Physical therapy may be provided in hospital or may be available at specialised clinics, hospices, schools and even in some industrial workplaces. Physical therapy is a service that is extended to many to reduce pain. There are many physical therapy equipment that are available and can be used effectively to aid in supporting people with various disabilities. Laser therapy equipment use laser to improve blood flow and thereby accelerate the healing process. Parallel bars are essential support for those patients who require support while walking. These bars are available as wall mountable as well as floor mounted. Training stairs are other essential equipment that promote stair climbing among patients. The caregivers of patients who are restricted to a wheel chair can use transfer boards for easy transfer of the patient from the wheel chair to the bed. Some of these transfer boards even have slots for easy handling. An important physical therapy equipment is the standing table or chair that allows easy transfer of the patient and also provides support for standing. This physical therapy equipment is available in different sizes for adults and children. Hydrotherapy is afforded by whirlpools that are designed to accommodate paediatric patients as well as geriatric patients. Sports injuries are assuaged to a large extent by the use of such physical therapy equipment. Massage beds are essential physical therapy equipment that are available with adjustable height options. Physical therapy includes soothing massages that are provided to alleviate pain and aid blood circulation. Physical therapists use an assessment and treatment format called the physical therapy SOAP notes which stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan (SOAP). This is a form of documentation of the patient’s notes that will aid the physical therapist in his treatment program and provide clarity about the patient’s status. There are certain basic guidelines that need to be followed while writing a physical therapy SOAP note as they include a large amount of medical terminologies and abbreviations. Insurance agents read through the physical therapy SOAP notes to ascertain whether the patients’ physical therapy sessions need to be included under insurance cover. The details that the insurance agencies look for while reading the SOAP notes are whether the patient requires physical therapy, whether the services of a skilled physical therapist are required for the particular medical condition or if the medical condition can be resolved by a massage therapist or an athletic trainer and whether there is a possibility of improvement in the condition of the patient after treatment is received for a particular duration of time. Physical therapists have formed a network of physical therapists who strive hard to improve the quality of physical therapy provided to the public in the form of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This association aims to provide best treatment options for people with movement disabilities and acts as a platform for further research. The association hopes to make physical therapy accessible to all individuals in need. Physical therapists would soon be doctors in physical therapy with direct access to patients, providing the best care required. People keen on providing service to those with movement disabilities can take up accredited physical therapy programs that are available in a large number of Universities. The website of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) lists the complete list of accredited physical therapy programs available in different universities across various states in the country. The admission requirement for eligibility into physical therapy programs are also provided in the American Physical Therapy Association website. Certain accredited physical therapy programs require a grade point average of 2.5 while certain others require a GPA as high as 3.5. The eligibility criterion for admission into a physical therapy program also includes the requirement for subjects like biology, chemistry, human anatomy, anatomy and physiology and social sciences to have been part of their course under graduate course. Te exact list of subjects that are required vary from one physical therapy program offered by a University to another. The University should be contacted for the exact eligibility criterion. |
